Q: Obviously your journey with McLuhan
continued. Did you follow along with McLuhan’s
journey from the world of literature into the world
of cultural analysis, and did you think McLuhan
saw that as a kind of stretch for him, or was it
just a natural theoretical leap?
A: There was a period particularly in the ’70s when
I sort of lost touch or lost interest in McLuhan. I
was interested in other things, I was very
interested in the psychological theories of Rilke,
and Freud and R.D. Lang, and other big names of
the ’60s and ’70s. McLuhan always used to say
that somebody like R.D. Lang—who was a cult
